Nikon D3100 Review: Auto Focus AF-F Face Priority Using Nikon 18-105mm VR

One more test of the Nikon D3100 Auto Focus AF-F Face Priority, this time with the Nikon 18-105mm VR. I shot hand-held instead of employing a steadicam, as I picture the vast majority of folks will be utilizing the D3100 this way. Note how the D3100 struggles to preserve focus, even on stationary subjects, and particularly how much of a challenging time it has re-gaining focus on moving subjects. The AF-F (continous auto focus in movie mode) focus is intermittent at greatest, totally lost at worst. I wouldn’t use the AF-F auto focus mode on the D3100 in location of a great camcorder like my Canon HF-200 (mind you, the good quality of the movie is far superior to any camcorder). You can also hear the Nikon 35mm f1.8G focusing on the audio. The only way to get around this is to manual focus or record on a seperate audio device and mix the tracks in an editing plan like Sony Vegas. I’ve got Nikon D3100 myself but before I bought it I Google up “sample photos” to see the quality and I saw your baby girl Lilly! Very impressive photo!!! Beautiful The videos aren’t that nice. I still need to workout the features. It’s a good idea to edit videos in some program afterwards.
    Very impressive photos!!! Beautiful children.

@89DerChristian left side of the lens of course… youtube needs an edit-button

  4. 89DerChristian says:

@RavenTheSkyKid: There’s a switch on the left side, above the switch for Vibration Reduction (VR)

@killaklish Agreed – One possibility is look into quieter focusing lenses

  6. dude2106 says:

@RavenTheSkyKid On the lens there is a A/M switch. Turn that from A to M and you will be able to manually focus.

I agree on everything you write BUT it’s an DSLR, NOT a camcorder. That it can actually record video, hey that’s just a bonus thing, but it’s main work is in photography where it shines.

how do you turn off the autofocus in video mode? thanx in advance.

how do you turn off the autofocus?

Wow, that autofocus surely has problems following a face that’s right in front of it. I always wonder why companies ship half-baked functionalities like these. Who wants to see the face of his child blurred a few times during a 30 sec clip? No one.

  15. cckc9 says:

oh….welll people who do makeup tutorials have slr cameras normally to film there videos and theres always focus by themselves….do u know how that is???

  16. treuuze says:

@cckc9 you need to press the shutter button half way down each time you want the camera to re-focus ;)

  17. cckc9 says:

@treuuze ohhh……i got this camera but i dont no how to make it so the auto focusing does it by itself without holding down the shutter button half way….do u?

  18. emreed1234 says:

The Sony nex-5 has no such AF noise during movie recording.

  19. treuuze says:

    @cckc9 it’s the auto-focus

  22. cckc9 says:
